About
Dr Christopher Smith is a cardiac surgeon with over 26 years in clinical practice. He is a graduate of the University of Queensland, and subsequently trained in General Surgery in Brisbane, and then Cardiothoracic Surgery in Brisbane and Melbourne.
Christopher subsequently completed a Postgraduate Fellowship at the University of Virginia Medical Centre Charlottesville USA, before returning to Australia as a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital (2000-2006).
Christopher has been a visiting cardiac surgeon at Greenslopes Private Hospital since 2003, and was the Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery from 2006 to 2024. During his clinical practice he has performed over 5000 open heart operations, and has also been involved in TAVI (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) since the commencement of the program. He is an accredited TAVI operator.
Christopher’s practice is now focussed on the management of Aortic Valve Disease with the minimally invasive TAVI approach. He has also been a keen pilot for many years and has a special interest in the management of cardiac valvular disease in aircrew.
